ABOUT EMC

"English Made Clear" is dedicated to a comprehensive, yet simple, approach to the English Language. It is the internet extension of an actual class, and can be easily coordinated for individual or group learning. It basically consists of hands-on grammar lessons from a workbook and video lessons from a PBS television series. These lessons are then enhanced by explanations and examples of the various subject areas, with links provided to other sites for further practice and exploration.

The grammar workbook used is "Grammar In Use", published in 2000, by Cambridge University Press. It was written by Raymond Murphy and contains many useful exercises about tenses, parts of speech, and other areas of grammar usage. It is aimed at intermediate students, those with a basic knowledge of English, but should be able to be understood by beginners, at least in part, in a short period of time. The answer booklet allows the student to work independently and is also a good tool for group work and classroom review.

The video series is from the PBS "Learn To Read" program, which is aired weekly in the New York City area at 5:30 am and 12:00 noon on Channel 13. Your local PBS program guide should list the times in your area. Your local library might even carry the VHS tapes or could borrow them from a branch that does. The series was produced by KET, Kentucky Educational Television, and features Wally Amos, Bruce Jenner, and friends, who take you through various situational learning experiences, along with grammar, spelling, and pronunciation exercises.

All navigation throughout the site is either done by means of imaged or colored links. The images are of various windows, which represent different perspectives of the world we live in, and they provide links to other websites. The colored links are all blue (except for "HOME", which is always green), turn yellow when hovered over, and link internal as well as external pages. None of the links are underlined, so you must move your mouse over them for verification. When they are clicked, or active, they turn red, and will not turn blue again until you click somewhere else on the page.

The site will always be under construction as we continue to expand our horizons, so be patient with us and with yourself and we will learn together. You never know what new horizons await as you journey through life. Just follow the instructions in red below and you might begin to understand ...
